Nestled in the charming suburb of West Hobart, overlooking the vibrant cityscape, stands a beautifully restored Federation home. This new Kitchen, crafted by Monaco Joinery & Design in collaboration with JAWS Architects, Lawless Wagner Builders, and Elite Appliances, exemplifies the pinnacle of contemporary elegance and timeless design.
A Symphony of Materials
The kitchen, the heart of this home, is a masterpiece of earthy materials. The architect employed a palette that includes brass, timber, steel, and stone, creating a classical yet contemporary aesthetic. The centerpiece is the island bench and dining table, crafted from reclaimed spotted gum. This 80mm thick timber, complete with its historical scars and blemishes, tells a story of its past life, adding character and warmth to the space.
Supporting the dining table is a solid steel sub-frame and legs, finished in Ferreko No 3 in Micaceous iron oxide, adding an industrial edge to the rustic timber. The island benchtop features a sleek 12mm Dekton surface, housing a double black sink and contrasting brass tapware, blending functionality with style. The Carrara marble waterfall ends and front panel provide a striking contrast, adding a touch of luxury to the earthy palette.
Thoughtful Design Details
The galley side of the kitchen continues the theme of natural materials with Tasmanian Oak veneer. Stained in Japan Black, finished with Livos natural oil. The dark tone is complemented by a Carrara marble splashback. Solid brass trim, and deep anthracite Laminex board, creating a rich, textured backdrop. The solid spotted gum drawer fronts with finger pull edges add a seamless and practical touch.
A Sophisticated Scullery
Moving into the scullery, the design maintains its sophisticated dark theme. Doors and panels are finished in Deep Anthracite from Laminex. Paired with a solid spotted gum edge detail and matching laminate on top. Custom open shelving, handcrafted door hardware, and solid mill finish steel bars for the spice rack add layers of texture and rawness, enhancing the scullery’s practical elegance.
